About Kevin Triplett

The Family von Shutterbug

Kevin thought all families had hall closets filled with cameras, photos, slides and movie reels. His mother, Tommie Triplett, began as a self-taught photographer in the 30's with one of the first Kodak Brownies, creating beautiful compositions strictly from intuition. His father, Don Triplett, took photos whenever Tommie wasn't and Kevin's oldest brother, Richard, became a professional photographer. His other brother Timothy and sister Donna, herself an accomplished oils and watercolor artist, are both amateur photographers.

Filmmaker Turns Mad Scientist

In his early teens, Kevin began creating and splicing skits with friends and a Super8 camera, even producing stop-motion animation with a toy monkey doll. Kevin's filmmaking career abruptly ended when K-Mart stopped selling film stock. There was nowhere else a small-town East Texas filmmaker could go for film, so Kevin turned to Radio Shack and over the years (literally) shocked his teachers and friends with various kinds of electronic devices, like music synthesizers made out of calculator parts and digital audio delay effect boxes.

Passion Becomes Profession

After graduating with an Electrical Engineering degree from Texas A&M in 1984 and going to work for Honeywell Optoelectronics on projects he's not allowed to talk about, Kevin continued his interest in photography, shooting alternative garage bands in the late 80's for a startup entertainment newspaper in Huntsville, Alabama. He developed black and white photos in the laundry room and experimented with optical effects. In '94, he bought an S-VHS camcorder, began practicing with a Steadicam JR and edited video using linear editing equipment. In '97, when digital video became widely available, Kevin started Mopac Media, offering broadcast-quality equipment to the emerging DV filmmaker community of Central Texas.

Why the "Mopac Media" name? Were you ever on Mopac?

My dad used to work for Missouri Pacific Lines, a railroad company, when I was a kid. Nothing glamorous like riding the rails, he was "Chief Yard Clerk" and was responsible for the railcars that came and went out of Palestine, Texas. At the time, Palestine was a major yard with lots of rail traffic and a big repair depot. I have fond memories of trains and when I began searching for a company name, among them was "Mopac" for various reasons: Mo for motion, Mopac is a recognizable name in Austin, it's a big freeway, Mopac Media as a company name is vague enough to be anything having to do with media and finally, but probably most important, the domain name "mopacmedia.com" was available. We've been in five different places but never on Mopac. By the way, Mopac was bought by Union Pacific so there's no such thing as Missouri Pacific Lines anymore.

Currently in post-production for BLAZE FOLEY: DUCT TAPE MESSIAH, a feature-length documentary, Kevin is kept super busy working on it and the company webserver, producing PSAs for te Summer Musical for Children, video programs for the Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities, the annual Barbara Jordan Media Awards Ceremony, designing a "first person perspective" computer game, and shooting photographs of all kinds of weird stuff. Although he's said it many times before, BLAZE FOLEY is scheduled for completion at the end of 2007 in time for submission to film festivals in 2008.
